Des Moines, IA – Patchy fog is set to develop across Iowa tonight, creating potentially hazardous travel conditions for Christmas Eve travelers. Drizzle is also likely on Christmas Day, especially in southeastern parts of the state, with light rain expected statewide by Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service, tonight’s fog will begin forming after 3 a.m., reducing visibility for drivers. Temperatures are forecast to hover near 30 degrees tonight, while Christmas Day will see highs near 40 with light winds. Early morning travelers on Christmas are urged to plan extra time due to the possibility of slick roads.
Wednesday night will bring more patchy fog and a slight chance of drizzle, particularly after 7 p.m. Thursday could see periods of drizzle transitioning into light rain, as temperatures climb to the mid-40s. Fog is likely to persist into the evenings throughout the week, impacting visibility each night.
By Friday, rain becomes increasingly likely, with a 60% chance of precipitation throughout the day. Highs will reach 50 degrees by Friday, and temperatures are expected to continue warming into the weekend, with Saturday seeing highs near 52.
Holiday travelers should remain cautious and keep an eye on local forecasts for updates. Fog and rain can make holiday commutes slower and more dangerous.
