Des Moines, IA – Light snow is expected across central Iowa Thursday, with accumulations potentially affecting evening commutes in the Des Moines area. Residents should prepare for colder conditions as temperatures stay below freezing through the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), scattered snow showers will begin Thursday afternoon, moving across the region through Thursday evening. Accumulations are expected to be less than an inch, but slick roads could make travel hazardous, especially on Interstate 35 and Highway 5. Temperatures will reach a high of 32°F on Thursday before dropping to the low 20s overnight.

Friday will bring mostly cloudy skies, with highs near 29°F and a slight chance of morning flurries. A west wind of 7 to 10 mph will make it feel even colder. By Saturday, partly sunny skies will prevail, but temperatures will remain frigid, with highs around 30°F and lows near 21°F.

Sunday’s forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies and a high of 27°F, with another chance of light snow possible late Sunday night. Wind chill values could dip to near zero at times, especially during the overnight hours this weekend.

Drivers should monitor road conditions closely and allow extra travel time during snow events. The Iowa DOT recommends checking 511ia.org for the latest road updates.

As temperatures remain well below freezing, residents are advised to bundle up and avoid prolonged exposure to the cold. Stay tuned to local forecasts for any updates, as conditions may change.
