Des Moines, IA – Strong thunderstorms and gusty winds are expected to move across Iowa today and tonight, raising safety concerns for residents, especially those south of Interstate 80. The National Weather Service warns of wind gusts reaching up to 40 mph by this evening, with the possibility of locally heavy rain and an isolated tornado.
According to the NWS Quad Cities, rain will spread north throughout the day, becoming heavier as the evening progresses. Embedded thunderstorms may lead to damaging winds, particularly south of I-80, where conditions could escalate into severe storms. Motorists are advised to monitor weather updates and drive cautiously, as wind and rain may create hazardous travel conditions.
The storm system is expected to taper off late tonight, giving way to a partly sunny Tuesday with highs near 59°F. Cooler temperatures are forecast for Wednesday, with mostly sunny skies and a high of 45°F. By Thursday, highs will drop to 41°F, continuing a trend of unseasonably brisk weather into the weekend.
Residents should secure outdoor items vulnerable to strong winds and remain alert for further weather updates. Those traveling along I-80 and surrounding areas are encouraged to plan for delays and keep emergency supplies on hand.
For a detailed five-day forecast, the region will see temperatures ranging from highs in the mid-40s to lows in the 20s by the weekend, accompanied by partly cloudy skies.
