Des Moines, Iowa – Strong thunderstorms will continue to sweep across central Iowa into Tuesday night, bringing gusty winds and heavy rainfall to key corridors like I-35 and I-80.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, severe weather is expected to impact areas including Polk, Story, Jasper, and Marshall counties until late Tuesday. A few storms could turn severe, with wind gusts topping 40 mph and locally heavy downpours up to an inch or more. Spotters may be needed Tuesday evening.

Drivers should avoid flooded roads and expect reduced visibility during evening commutes. Urban areas like Des Moines and Ames may experience minor street flooding and brief power outages due to downed limbs.

While conditions begin to ease by early Wednesday morning, isolated storm chances remain southeast through the afternoon. Most of central Iowa—including Ankeny, Newton, and Knoxville—should enjoy a calmer, mostly sunny day Wednesday with highs around 77°F.

By midweek, a break in active weather arrives. However, chances for scattered showers return Thursday and Saturday night. Rainfall totals remain light, but outdoor plans may need adjusting.
