Des Moines, IA – Snow and fog are creating dangerous travel conditions across Iowa as the region prepares to ring in the New Year. Overnight snow has left roadways, including sections of I-80 and I-35, slick and partially covered, prompting caution for holiday travelers.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), snow showers are expected to taper off early Tuesday, but patchy fog and freezing temperatures will persist, creating hazardous conditions on untreated roads. Highs will reach 34°F Tuesday before dipping to the low 20s overnight, with winds gusting up to 28 mph reducing visibility further.

Travelers heading out for New Year’s Day celebrations on Wednesday should expect mostly sunny skies, with highs around 29°F. However, any remaining snow and freezing temperatures overnight could refreeze surfaces, especially on bridges and overpasses. The Iowa Department of Transportation recommends checking 511ia.org for real-time road conditions before traveling.

Looking ahead, another round of snow is likely Thursday morning, with a 60% chance of precipitation. Temperatures will drop sharply late in the week, with lows in the single digits by Friday night. Wind chills could make it feel even colder, so those venturing outdoors should bundle up.

Drivers are urged to slow down and allow extra time for their trips, especially along frequently traveled corridors like I-80. Snowplows are actively working, but caution is still necessary.
