Des Moines, Iowa – Scattered storms could dampen Wednesday afternoon plans in central Iowa, with slick roadways and brief downpours possible through evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms will develop after 1 p.m. Wednesday, primarily affecting Polk County and surrounding areas. North winds near 7 mph will accompany temperatures in the low 70s. While rain totals are expected to remain light, commuters along I-235 and I-80 should be alert for sudden pavement slickness and brief visibility drops.

The storm threat will fade after sundown, giving way to partly cloudy skies and cooler lows around 51°F on Wednesday night. The rest of the week trends dry. Thursday holds only a 20% chance of showers, with highs in the mid-70s and mostly sunny skies returning.

By Friday, summer warmth kicks in. Highs will rise to 80°F under clear skies. Saturday and Sunday will feel even warmer, with highs reaching 84°F and 86°F, respectively. Nighttime lows hover comfortably in the 60s, making for a mild stretch through the weekend.

Drivers should stay weather-aware on Wednesday, especially during school dismissal and evening commutes. Keep rain gear handy and avoid sudden braking on wet roads.

Weather conditions are expected to remain calm into early next week. Monday will bring sunshine and highs near 87°F. No weather alerts are in place beyond Wednesday, but updates will be issued if that changes.
