Des Moines, IA – A powerful winter storm is set to bring heavy snowfall and blizzard conditions to northwestern Iowa, with travel becoming treacherous through Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, snowfall rates could reach 1 to 2 inches per hour, with some areas experiencing thundersnow. Winds exceeding 60 mph are expected to create near-zero visibility and hazardous travel conditions.

Areas such as Fort Dodge, Carroll, and Mason City are on the fringes of the heaviest snowfall, where accumulations of 8 to 12 inches are likely. Snow drifts and power outages may occur due to wind-driven snow.

The storm will continue to impact travel throughout Wednesday, especially during peak commute hours. Officials advise residents to check weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel.
