Cherokee, IA – A line of strong storms is moving into northwest Iowa, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for 12 counties through early Tuesday morning.
According to the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, the watch—numbered 357—is in effect until 1 a.m. CDT Tuesday and includes the following counties: Buena Vista, Cherokee, Clay, Dickinson, Ida, Lyon, Monona, O’Brien, Osceola, Plymouth, Sioux, and Woodbury.
The affected areas could see damaging winds, large hail, frequent lightning, and isolated tornadoes as storms build in intensity through the evening hours. The NWS encourages residents in the watch area to monitor weather alerts and have multiple ways to receive warnings.
Emergency management and weather officials are urging Iowans to avoid travel during the most active storm periods and to seek shelter indoors if warnings are issued.
The watch comes as part of a larger severe weather system moving across the central Plains, with Iowa’s northwest region at elevated risk for strong storm activity into the overnight hours.
More updates will be issued as conditions develop. Stay tuned to local media and NOAA Weather Radio for the latest forecasts and safety advisories.
