Des Moines, IA – Residents in the Des Moines area should brace for severe thunderstorms today, with the potential for heavy rain, flash floods, and damaging winds. The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory and warns of storm speeds reaching 50-60 mph. Rainfall totals could reach 2-4 inches, posing a risk for urban flooding and ponding, especially in areas like downtown Des Moines and along major routes such as I-235.

According to the National Weather Service, the severe weather threat includes possible tornadoes, especially in the late afternoon and evening hours. Fast-moving storms with limited visibility could worsen conditions after sunset, increasing risks for those on the road. Residents are urged to identify a safe shelter and stay updated on the latest warnings. Localized flash flooding is a primary concern due to recent dry conditions, which can make sudden downpours particularly hazardous on already congested roads.

By Thursday, skies are expected to gradually clear, with temperatures dropping to a high of 52°F. Breezy conditions will continue, with winds up to 21 mph. Friday brings calmer weather, with sunny skies and a high of 59°F, giving the region a brief respite. However, more rain is forecast for Saturday, with a 40% chance of showers returning by afternoon, and further chances into the night.

With weather conditions remaining unpredictable, the NWS recommends staying tuned to local forecasts, heeding road advisories, and taking precautions, especially in low-lying areas and near rivers.
