Quad Cities, Iowa–Illinois – Tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail could batter parts of eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois tonight, with the highest threat from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. Tuesday. Residents from Waterloo to the Quad Cities are urged to have shelter plans ready as storms may strengthen quickly after dark.
According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities, an enhanced risk (Level 3 of 5) covers much of eastern Iowa, including Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and Waterloo, with a slight risk (Level 2) extending into the Quad Cities and western Illinois. Storms moving northeast at 50 mph could produce tornadoes, hail larger than two inches, and winds capable of knocking down trees and powerlines.
Waterloo faces the greatest tornado threat, while damaging hail is most likely along a line from Cedar Rapids to Freeport. Travel tonight could become hazardous, especially with limited visibility and debris. Officials advise securing loose outdoor items, charging devices, and reviewing emergency shelter locations before evening storms arrive.
Severe weather threats are expected to taper by dawn, but additional alerts may be issued if storms redevelop Tuesday. Stay tuned to local warnings and be ready to act quickly if a tornado warning is issued overnight.
