Des Moines, Iowa – Severe thunderstorms and strong wind gusts could disrupt travel and outdoor plans across central Iowa beginning Monday morning and continuing into early Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, a round of storms could develop before 11 a.m. Monday, bringing heavy rain, lightning, and wind gusts reaching up to 30 mph. Some storms may become severe, especially during the afternoon hours, as temperatures climb to a humid 82 degrees.

Residents in Des Moines, Ankeny, Ames, and nearby areas should prepare for sudden downpours, possible minor flooding on roads, and localized power outages. South and southeast winds will strengthen throughout the day, with speeds up to 21 mph and higher gusts. Drivers are urged to use caution, particularly on I-35 and I-80, where visibility could quickly deteriorate.

Tonight, a 30 percent chance of lingering showers remains, but the heaviest impacts are expected to subside by early Tuesday. Officials recommend securing outdoor items, charging devices, and planning for possible delays during commutes.

Although calmer conditions return Tuesday with mostly sunny skies, the risk of additional showers and storms will pick back up midweek.
