Des Moines, Iowa – Strong thunderstorms are sweeping across central Iowa this evening, with potential for damaging 70 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail prompting a Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect until 10 p.m. CDT Monday.
According to the National Weather Service and Storm Prediction Center, clusters of storms are intensifying from eastern Nebraska through southwest and central Iowa, including the cities of Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, Ames, and Shenandoah. The watch also includes far northwest Missouri and southeast Nebraska.
Storms may organize into fast-moving lines capable of downing trees, power lines, and causing scattered outages. Gusty winds are the primary threat, but isolated hail and frequent lightning are also possible. Nearly 2 million residents, 828 schools, and 68 hospitals lie within the watch zone.
Major roadways such as I-80, I-35, and I-29 could see rapid weather changes, especially near Des Moines and Cedar Rapids. Drivers should remain alert and delay travel if conditions worsen.
This is the first widespread severe thunderstorm watch for Iowa this June, and more storm activity could continue through the night.
