Des Moines, IA – Freezing rain is creating dangerous travel conditions across central Iowa as a Winter Weather Advisory remains active until noon. Slick roads, icy sidewalks, and freezing fog are making travel hazardous this morning, with accumulations of up to two-tenths of an inch of ice reported.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), freezing rain is expected to taper off by midday, but fog may persist into Sunday morning. US 63 and other major roadways in the region are particularly hazardous, with visibility reduced in some areas. Travelers are urged to stay home if possible or use extreme caution if driving. Check Iowa’s 511 road conditions tool before heading out.

Temperatures will hover around 27 degrees today, with light winds from the east-southeast. Overnight, patchy fog and scattered freezing rain showers may return as temperatures drop to 32 degrees. Sunday brings slight improvement, with mostly cloudy skies and highs reaching the low 40s.

Looking ahead, Monday offers a reprieve with sunny skies and a high of 43 degrees, but temperatures drop again overnight, bringing lows in the mid-20s. Tuesday remains dry, with partly sunny conditions and highs near 41 degrees.

Residents should stay alert for slippery conditions on roads, driveways, and sidewalks throughout the weekend. Take precautions to avoid falls and ensure vehicles are properly prepared for icy conditions.
