Omaha, Nebraska – A hot, smoky Sunday will give way to thunder, lightning, and potential downpours across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa by Monday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha, showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop late Monday, with peak activity between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. Tuesday. Wind gusts could reach 28 mph, and rainfall totals may range from a tenth to a quarter inch, with isolated higher amounts near the Missouri River corridor.

The Omaha metro, Council Bluffs, and areas surrounding Carter Lake could see brief power flickers, slippery roads, and low visibility during the overnight storms. Drivers are urged to reduce speed during wet conditions, and residents should secure outdoor items ahead of gusty winds.

Before the storms arrive, expect dry heat and smoke haze Sunday and Monday with highs near 90°F. Smoke may linger into Sunday night, limiting air quality for sensitive groups. Conditions clear briefly Tuesday afternoon before a second round of weaker storms returns Tuesday night.

Winds calm by midweek with temps dropping into the mid-70s. Another rain chance returns by Friday.

Five-Day Forecast for Carter Lake Area:

  • Monday: Sunny, high 91°F. Gusts up to 28 mph.
  • Monday Night: Thunderstorms likely. Low 61°F.
  • Tuesday: Showers, high 67°F. Breezy north winds.
  • Wednesday: Mostly sunny, slight shower chance early. High 74°F.
