Davenport, Iowa – Wildfire smoke and a rising chance of severe thunderstorms will collide over eastern Iowa and western Illinois on Wednesday, creating a messy midweek weather setup with real risks for both visibility and flooding.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, smoke aloft from Canadian wildfires will continue to linger across the region through Wednesday, lowering air quality, especially in areas like Davenport, Moline, and along I-80. Meanwhile, a Slight Risk (level 2 of 5) for severe storms has been issued, with damaging wind gusts and heavy rainfall of 1 to 2 inches possible in localized downpours.

Travel could be impacted across key corridors, including I-74 and I-80, especially from late Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday night. Gusty winds up to 30 mph could accompany the storms, with isolated flash flooding not out of the question in low-lying areas.

Humidity will spike midweek, fueling storm development and adding discomfort across Scott, Rock Island, and Henry counties. While severe weather is not anticipated Thursday or Friday, scattered showers and thunderstorms may continue through the end of the week.

What’s Next: Conditions improve slightly by Saturday, but unsettled weather returns Sunday. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity during smoky periods and secure loose outdoor items ahead of gusty winds.
