Illinois wakes up under a pale winter sun, where cold air stiffens fingers and river ice groans beneath shifting currents. Along the Rock River near Moline, winter weather is no longer just cold—it’s dynamic and potentially dangerous.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, an ice jam continues along portions of the Rock River today. Minor flooding remains possible, especially in low-lying areas near the riverbanks. Ice jams are unpredictable, and water levels can rise quickly with little warning.

Temperatures this morning sit in the mid-20s across the Quad Cities, including Davenport, Rock Island, Bettendorf, and Moline. Skies turn partly sunny today, but the cold keeps river ice largely intact for now. Residents near the Rock River should stay alert and be ready to move to higher ground if conditions change.

Travel impacts remain limited away from the river. Roads stay mostly dry, though cold pavement can hide slick spots early. Areas closest to the river may see localized flooding affecting access roads or riverfront trails if ice shifts suddenly.

Tonight stays cold, with lows near 20 degrees. Saturday brings calmer winter weather, with sunshine and highs near 31. That brief warm-up may stress river ice, increasing the risk of break-up and rapid water movement.

By Sunday, temperatures climb into the mid-30s. That warming trend continues into early next week, with highs approaching the upper 40s by Monday. Warmer air raises concerns for additional ice movement not only on the Rock River, but also nearby tributaries like the Skunk River.

Officials urge residents near rivers to monitor conditions closely. Ice jam flooding can develop fast, even without rain. Avoid walking on river ice and keep children and pets away from riverbanks.
