Des Moines, IA – A significant ice storm is sweeping through central and southeastern Iowa, causing hazardous travel conditions and power outage concerns. Officials warn of substantial freezing rain accumulations overnight into Saturday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, freezing rain began moving across the region Friday night and will intensify before dawn. Ice accumulations between two-tenths and three-tenths of an inch are expected, with some areas potentially seeing higher amounts. The warning affects cities such as Marshalltown, Cedar Rapids, and Iowa City, with gusty winds compounding risks.

Roadways, bridges, and overpasses are expected to become dangerously slick. Ice-coated power lines and tree limbs may lead to scattered outages. Travel is strongly discouraged, but if unavoidable, drivers should carry emergency supplies, including flashlights and food.

Temperatures are forecast to rise Saturday afternoon, transitioning freezing rain into a cold rain in southern areas. Northern parts of the state may see light snow before conditions improve later in the day.

Residents are urged to delay travel, winterize vehicles, and monitor updates through the Iowa 511 app or website.
