Des Moines, IA – Parts of Iowa are under an ice storm warning until 6 p.m. Saturday as freezing rain blankets the state. Hazardous road conditions and power outages are expected across affected areas.
According to the National Weather Service, freezing rain and sleet are advancing across central and northern Iowa. Counties including Marshall, Jasper, and Poweshiek could see up to a tenth of an inch of ice accumulation. Additional warnings extend to Grundy, Butler, and Black Hawk counties, where travel remains dangerous.
Roads, bridges, and sidewalks are already slick, with ice weighing down power lines and tree limbs. Officials warn that power outages could last for extended periods. Residents are urged to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.
Drivers who must travel should prepare emergency supplies and drive cautiously, allowing extra time to reach destinations. The Iowa 511 app and website provide real-time travel updates.
As temperatures rise, precipitation may shift to rain in southern areas, reducing some ice risks by evening. Still, caution is advised throughout the storm’s duration.
