Omaha, NE – A sharp Arctic blast is set to sweep through Nebraska starting Friday evening, bringing dangerously low temperatures and gusty winds to the region. Residents should prepare for subzero wind chills and strong gusts peaking at 26 mph by Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service, today’s high will reach a mild 46°F, but temperatures will rapidly decline by Friday night as northwest winds strengthen. Saturday will see highs near 20°F, with gusts as strong as 16 mph. Temperatures will plummet to a bitter low of 2°F by Saturday night, leading to an unseasonably frigid Sunday.

Sunday’s high is forecasted at only 12°F, with wind chills dipping below zero due to gusts of up to 21 mph. Those traveling along major roadways, including I-80 and US-75, should exercise caution as freezing conditions may create hazardous spots. Drivers are urged to bundle up and keep emergency kits in their vehicles.

By Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the high will only reach 10°F, making outdoor celebrations or events challenging. The low will fall to -3°F overnight, with brisk northwest winds continuing. Relief from the cold will begin midweek, with highs climbing back into the 30s by Wednesday.

The sudden temperature plunge underscores the importance of winter preparedness. Residents are advised to check heating systems, stock up on essentials, and limit outdoor exposure during the coldest periods.
