Iowa Extreme Cold Warning: Frigid Temps and Snow Expected Wednesday, Prepare for Icy Roads

Des Moines, IA – An Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect across central Iowa through noon Tuesday, with life-threatening wind chills as low as -38°F. Residents are urged to limit outdoor exposure and take precautions against frostbite, which can occur within 10 minutes on exposed skin.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Des Moines, temperatures this morning are between -10°F and -20°F, with wind gusts up to 23 mph producing dangerously low wind chills. Gradual improvement is expected after 8 a.m., but temperatures will stay below freezing all day, with a high of only 13°F.

Looking ahead, clouds will increase tonight as temperatures rise slightly to 18°F. Snow is forecast for Wednesday, bringing up to half an inch of accumulation. Wind chills on Wednesday morning may still dip to -10°F before temperatures climb to a high of 31°F by the afternoon.

By Thursday, skies will clear, and highs will reach 19°F, but overnight lows will drop back to around 5°F. A warming trend will continue into Friday, with highs near 29°F under partly sunny skies.

Residents are reminded to dress in layers, wear hats, gloves, and face coverings, and check on vulnerable neighbors and pets. Drivers should exercise caution on icy roads, especially on heavily traveled routes like I-235.
