Des Moines, IA – Bitterly cold air will settle over Iowa late tonight through Monday morning, bringing subzero wind chills and frigid overnight lows, according to the National Weather Service in Des Moines.
Behind the departing winter system, temperatures will plummet overnight, with wind chill values between -5°F and -15°F across much of central and northern Iowa. Cities including Ames, Fort Dodge, Mason City, and Waterloo will feel the harshest cold early Sunday and Monday mornings, when brisk northwest winds combine with lows in the single digits.
Although sunshine will return during the day Sunday, temperatures are expected to remain in the teens and 20s, keeping conditions feeling much colder. A modest warm-up is forecast Monday afternoon, with highs climbing into the upper 20s and low 30s.
The NWS urges residents to bundle up, limit outdoor exposure, and check on pets and neighbors. Motorists should also keep jumper cables and an emergency kit in their vehicles in case of breakdowns.
Wind chills this cold can lead to frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes, forecasters warn.
