Des Moines, IA – Rain and gusty winds will dominate Iowa’s weather today, with thunderstorms potentially intensifying in the southern part of the state by tonight. Residents should prepare for up to an inch of rain during the day and remain alert for storms that could turn severe later in the evening.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), widespread rain will move north through Iowa throughout Monday, with wind gusts expected to exceed 35 mph. Thunderstorms may develop in southern counties, including the Des Moines area, after sunset. Drivers along I-80 and other major roadways should exercise caution as conditions may deteriorate quickly.
Overnight, the rain will taper off, leaving behind breezy conditions and temperatures dipping to 49°F. By Tuesday, clearer skies will emerge, bringing sunshine and highs near 53°F. Winds will remain breezy, with gusts reaching 30 mph.
Looking ahead, the midweek forecast brings a return to sunny and cooler conditions. Wednesday’s high will reach 43°F, with windy conditions continuing. Overnight lows are expected to drop to the upper 20s. By Thursday and Friday, calm weather takes over with partly cloudy skies and highs near 41°F and 42°F, respectively.
