Des Moines, IA – Central Iowa is in for a bitterly cold stretch as dangerously low wind chills and accumulating snow move in for Valentine’s Day and the weekend. A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. Thursday, with wind chills as low as -30°F.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will briefly climb to 14°FThursday before dropping again. Snow is expected Friday afternoon and evening, potentially impacting the evening commute with 1-2 inches of accumulation. Additional snow could arrive Friday night into Saturday, with a 70% chance of precipitation.
Wind chills between -15°F and -30°F will be common Sunday through next week, making frostbite possible within minutes. Residents should dress in layers and avoid prolonged exposure.
Expect highs in the single digits and teens through the weekend, with overnight lows below zero. Travel conditions could deteriorate Friday night into Saturday.
