Des Moines, IA – A powerful blizzard is sweeping across Iowa, bringing heavy snow, strong winds, and hazardous travel conditions. The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Warning for much of the state, in effect until 3 PM CST Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, snow has already begun falling in western Iowa and is quickly spreading eastward. Rain is expected to transition to snow overnight in central Iowa, with total accumulations ranging from 2 to 8 inches depending on location. The heaviest snowfall is expected near the Minnesota border.

Winds are a major concern, with gusts reaching up to 65 mph, leading to whiteout conditions and near-zero visibility in open areas. Blowing and drifting snow will make roads treacherous, and authorities are urging residents to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.

The storm is expected to significantly impact the Wednesday morning commute, with dangerous road conditions across cities including Des Moines, Ames, Waterloo, and Fort Dodge. Additionally, the strong winds could cause tree damage and power outages in affected areas.

Residents are advised to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and keep a winter survival kit in their vehicles if travel is unavoidable. For the latest road conditions, check the Iowa 511 app or visit www.511ia.org.
