Davenport, Iowa – Drivers in eastern Iowa and northwestern Illinois may face slick roads and reduced visibility early Thursday as widespread rain and embedded thunderstorms sweep through the region. The heaviest rainfall is expected north of Interstate 80 between 4 and 6 a.m., with localized totals topping a half inch.
According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, the storm system is moving from south to north, with moderate to briefly heavy rain likely across a broad swath of the area. The steadiest downpours will shift north of I-80 during the early morning hours and may linger until around 9 a.m. Scattered thunderstorms are also possible mainly south of the interstate, especially near Burlington and Galesburg.
Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Davenport, and Rockford are among the cities where rain may reduce visibility and cause minor ponding on roads. Commuters are advised to allow extra travel time and avoid flooded areas. Rural low-lying roads may be especially hazardous during the morning drive.
This system marks one of the broader rainfall events of the spring so far, with the potential to disrupt early Thursday plans. Additional updates may follow if storms intensify or shift in track. Rain is expected to taper off by late morning.
