Des Moines, Iowa – Hazy skies and poor air quality could return to Iowa on Friday as smoke from Canadian wildfires drifts southward, potentially reaching the surface across the eastern part of the state by late afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, much of the smoke will remain aloft, but a portion may settle closer to the ground by 4 p.m. Friday. If that occurs, residents may notice a smoky smell, reduced visibility, and increased health risks—especially for people with asthma, heart conditions, or sensitivity to air pollution.
The highest concentrations are expected in eastern Iowa, including Davenport, Cedar Rapids, and Iowa City. Parts of Interstate 80 and Highway 61 could see visibility drop during the evening commute. Officials urge residents to limit outdoor activity if air quality worsens, particularly those in vulnerable groups.
Before heading outside Friday, check air quality conditions at fire.airnow.gov. Skies may appear hazy or milky even where smoke remains elevated.
Air quality impacts could linger into Saturday. More updates are expected as smoke patterns evolve.
