Gaylord, MI – Northern Michigan is in the grip of a powerful lake effect snowstorm, with the Gaylord area expected to see over a foot of snow by Saturday night. A winter storm warning remains in effect, creating treacherous travel conditions and prompting safety advisories for residents across the region.

According to the National Weather Service, intense snow bands will continue to develop through Saturday, producing snowfall rates of 1-3 inches per hour in localized areas. Winds gusting up to 25 mph will worsen visibility and cause drifting snow, especially along highways like I-75 and US-131. Slick, snow-covered roads and rapidly changing conditions will make travel dangerous, particularly during peak snowfall.

Saturday’s high is forecast near 27 degrees, with additional snow accumulations of 2-4 inches during the day. Areas outside the heaviest snow bands could still see several inches of snow, making road conditions hazardous throughout the weekend.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for potential delays. Keep emergency supplies in vehicles, such as blankets, flashlights, and food, if travel is unavoidable. Stay updated on local forecasts and road conditions as this storm progresses.
