Indiana wakes up to slick pavement, standing water, and a steady drip from gray March skies as heavy rain pushes rivers and creeks higher this morning. Puddles are spreading across low-lying roads, and drivers along I-65 and I-70 are already seeing spray kick up from tires during the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, a Flood Watch remains in effect until 10 a.m. as rounds of rain produce between 2 and 4 inches across central Indiana. Additional showers and a few thunderstorms may redevelop later today, with localized flash flooding possible in poor drainage areas. Rain chances stay elevated into Friday, when stronger storms could organize south and west of the metro.
Indianapolis International Airport reported light rain and fog with temperatures in the mid-40s after sunrise. Visibility may dip at times, especially on untreated rural roads. Creeks in Marion, Johnson, and Hamilton counties could approach bankfull if heavier bands redevelop. If you encounter water over a roadway, turn around immediately.
To be fair, this is also the time of year when brief clearing and mild air can refreeze on cold pavement after sunset, creating patchy slick spots. Flash freezing becomes more common in early March as daytime melting gives way to colder nights.
Looking ahead, temperatures climb into the 60s and 70s by Friday and into early next week. Spring warmth builds, and above-normal readings may stretch into the 6–10 day outlook. We also spring our clocks ahead at 2 a.m. Sunday, March 8, gaining lighter evenings and nearly 70 more minutes of daylight this month.
