Indianapolis, IN – Indiana is gearing up for a bitter Arctic blast that’s expected to bring subzero wind chills, single-digit lows, and dangerously cold mornings from Thursday, December 11, through Monday, December 15. The frigid airmass will impact much of the state, including Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, South Bend, Evansville, and Lafayette, late next weekend.

According to the National Weather Service, confidence is high that this will be the coldest air of the season so far, with morning lows dipping into the single digits and wind chills dropping to –10°F or lower at times. Brisk northwest winds will make conditions feel even more severe, particularly overnight and during early commutes.

The weather pattern will remain mostly dry, though occasional flurries or brief snow showers may occur—especially across northern counties near Lake Michigan. Forecasters note that precipitation chances are low, but travelers should stay alert for icy patches and reduced visibility in flurry bands.

State officials urge residents to limit outdoor time, bundle up in layers, and bring pets indoors during the cold snap. Vehicle emergency kits, including blankets, flashlights, and water, are also recommended for anyone traveling long distances.

Temperatures are forecast to remain well below normal through December 16, with gradual warming expected early the following week.

Stay tuned for updates from the National Weather Service Indianapolis and Indiana Department of Homeland Security as the Arctic outbreak approaches.
