Indianapolis, Indiana – Light snow accumulation and areas of freezing drizzle are expected to impact central and northern Indiana early Friday, potentially creating hazardous travel conditions during the morning commute, according to the National Weather Service.
Forecasters say stronger snow showers will move in from the north during the pre-dawn hours Friday, with snow continuing through the morning across Indianapolis and areas to the north and east. Snow is expected to taper from west to east by midday, with drier conditions developing Friday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service Indianapolis office, snowfall totals of up to 1 to 2 inches are possible across northeastern Indiana, while lighter accumulations are expected farther southwest. In addition to snow, a thin glaze of ice from freezing drizzle is possible across parts of west-central and southwestern Indiana, including areas near Terre Haute and Shoals.
The highest confidence for light snow accumulation includes areas near and north of Interstate 70, with the greatest threat focused along corridors such as Interstate 65, Interstate 69, Interstate 70, U.S. Route 31, and State Road 37. Even minor accumulations could lead to slick roads, reduced visibility, and slower travel during peak morning hours.
Temperatures are expected to remain near or below freezing early Friday, allowing snow and ice to accumulate on untreated surfaces. Bridges, overpasses, and secondary roads may become slippery before road crews are able to respond.
The National Weather Service notes that freezing drizzle poses a particular hazard because ice can form quickly with little visible precipitation. Drivers are urged to reduce speed, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time.
Snow showers may linger into Friday afternoon in northeastern Indiana before ending. Colder air will follow, though a gradual warming trend is expected later in the weekend.
This system may be especially impactful for commuters, students, and early-morning workers traveling along central Indiana roadways.
