Indianapolis, IN – A winter storm warning remains in effect across central Indiana through Monday evening, with up to five inches of snow expected and freezing drizzle creating dangerous road conditions. Over 40,000 homes statewide are without power as crews work to restore service amid high winds and icy conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, heavy snow will continue into Monday morning, with another 1–2 inches possible during the day. Gusts reaching 40 mph are expected to worsen conditions, especially along I-70 and other major roadways, leading to potential whiteouts and slick bridges. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and to keep an emergency kit in their vehicles if driving is unavoidable.

Temperatures are expected to drop sharply overnight, with subzero wind chills likely by midweek. Tuesday’s high will reach only 28°F, with calm conditions returning by the afternoon. Another round of snow is possible by Friday, adding further complications for travel and outdoor activities.

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security is urging residents to check on neighbors, stay updated on power restoration efforts, and use warming centers if necessary. Generators should be placed outdoors to avoid carbon monoxide risks. A full list of warming centers and preparedness tips is available at in211.communityos.org.

Residents should prepare for prolonged outages, conserve heat, and stay indoors as much as possible. For the latest weather updates, visit weather.gov.
