Indianapolis, IN – An Arctic air mass is set to plunge temperatures across Indiana this weekend, bringing single-digit highs and subzero lows. Residents should prepare for dangerously cold weather, especially starting Sunday night through early next week. Wind chills could drop into the negative teens, posing a risk for frostbite and hypothermia.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, highs will struggle to reach 7 degrees on Monday, with lows dipping to -8 degrees Sunday night. The bitter cold will continue through Tuesday, with highs near 4 degrees and nighttime lows around -5 degrees. Wind speeds up to 15 mph will amplify the chill.
By Friday, temperatures will begin dropping after a rain-snow mix transitions to snow in the evening. Light accumulations could create slick spots on major roadways, including I-70 and I-65. Saturday will bring a brief respite with highs near 37 degrees, but by Sunday, the Arctic front arrives, drastically dropping temperatures.
The NWS warns residents to limit outdoor exposure and bundle up if venturing outside. Ensure pets have adequate shelter, and check on elderly neighbors. Precautionary measures, such as letting faucets drip to prevent pipe freezing, are recommended.
Looking ahead, the cold pattern is expected to ease by midweek, but highs will remain below freezing. Temperatures are forecast to rise slightly by Thursday, offering some relief.
