Indiana Weather Outlook Today: Winter Normals and Snowfall Trends Released

Indiana – Indiana residents are getting a clearer picture of what to expect this winter as new seasonal climate stats were released highlighting average temperatures, normal snowfall, and historical extremes across the state.

According to the National Weather Service Indianapolis, typical winter highs range from the mid-30s to low 40s, while lows usually fall into the low to mid-20s. The agency notes that Indiana’s average seasonal snowfall sits at 21.2 inches, though recent years have seen significant swings.

Seasonal snow totals over the last five winters show wide variability. The winter of 2020–2021 was the snowiest recent season with 22.2 inches, while the 2023–2024 season brought only 8.2 inches. Snowfall during 2024–2025 reached 17.1 inches, marking a moderate rebound compared to other recent years.

According to the weather service, Indiana has also recorded dramatic winter extremes. The state’s snowiest season occurred in 2013–2014, when 52.2 inches fell. The least snowy winter dates back to 1931–1932, with just 0.2 inches measured. Temperature extremes are equally notable: Indiana’s coldest recorded temperature was -27°F on January 19, 1994, while the coldest high temperature was -11°F on January 20, 1985.

As Indiana heads deeper into winter, residents are watching closely to see whether snowfall returns to normal levels or continues the recent pattern of fluctuation.
