Indianapolis, Indiana – Scattered thunderstorms could bring gusty winds, small hail, and rare cold air funnels across central Indiana through late Friday evening, with impacts stretching from Lafayette and Kokomo to Columbus and Bloomington.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, these storms will persist until around midnight, with the strongest activity expected in counties including Marion, Tippecanoe, Hamilton, and Monroe. Brief downpours, lightning, and small hail may create hazardous driving conditions on major routes like I-65, I-69, and I-70.
While cold air funnels are not typically dangerous and rarely touch down, the NWS advises residents to remain alert for any rapid changes in weather, especially if a warning is issued. Areas from Muncie to Terre Haute and as far south as Seymour may see sudden wind gusts or isolated power flickers.
Travelers and residents should keep multiple ways to receive weather alerts, avoid outdoor activities during storms, and secure loose outdoor items. For most, these funnels will be a curiosity rather than a threat, but it’s best to stay prepared in case the weather takes a turn.
Another update will be issued if conditions worsen, with advisories likely to remain in effect through Friday night.
