Indianapolis, IN – Light freezing rain is expected to develop across northern parts of central Indiana late Friday night, potentially leading to hazardous road conditions into Saturday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, precipitation will begin Friday evening and intensify overnight. With temperatures below freezing, freezing rain is expected for several hours, possibly accumulating up to a tenth of an inch of ice by morning. The heaviest ice accumulation is forecast along the I-74 corridor, stretching from western Indiana to areas north of Indianapolis, including Muncie and Winchester.

Untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses may develop slick spots, increasing the risk of travel disruptions. Drivers should exercise caution and allow extra travel time, especially in affected areas.

The freezing rain threat will diminish Saturday morning as temperatures rise above freezing, transitioning precipitation to rain. However, early morning commuters should remain vigilant for lingering ice, particularly on elevated surfaces.

For updated weather alerts and road conditions, travelers can check INDOT traffic reports and the National Weather Service.
