Indianapolis, IN – Central Indiana residents should prepare for a sudden cold snap overnight as a Freeze Warning goes into effect early Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, sub-freezing temperatures as low as 24 degrees are expected between 1 a.m. and 10 a.m. EDT on Tuesday, April 8. The warning covers a broad area including Indianapolis, Lafayette, Muncie, Terre Haute, Bloomington, and surrounding counties.
This unseasonable chill poses a risk to sensitive vegetation and unprotected outdoor plumbing. Local growers and homeowners are strongly advised to take immediate precautions to protect tender plants and exposed pipes.
April freezes are not uncommon in Indiana, but temperatures in the low 20s can still cause significant agricultural damage. Typically, frost risk decreases after mid-April, making this cold spell especially impactful to early spring planting efforts.
The warning includes 59 counties, stretching from Carroll and Tippecanoe in the north to Jackson and Jennings in the south. Municipal officials have not issued additional restrictions, but residents are encouraged to monitor updates and prepare accordingly.
Experts recommend covering plants overnight, draining garden hoses, and insulating any exposed exterior water lines to prevent damage.
