Indianapolis, IN – A large portion of Indiana will be under a Flood Watch starting Wednesday evening, as the state braces for several days of heavy rainfall that could lead to river, creek, and street flooding.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, the Flood Watch will be in effect from 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, through 8 a.m. Sunday, April 6, impacting more than 30 counties, including Marion, Hamilton, Vigo, Monroe, and Knox. Forecasters warn that multiple rounds of rainfall could produce excessive runoff, increasing the risk of flash flooding and significant river rises.
The most intense rain is expected from Wednesday night through Saturday night, with flash flooding possible during the early periods and larger river systems potentially flooding later in the week. Urban areas like Indianapolis, Muncie, Bloomington, and Terre Haute could see widespread street flooding, particularly in low-lying neighborhoods and flood-prone roadways.
Residents are urged to monitor weather alerts and have evacuation plans if they live in flood-susceptible areas. Drivers should avoid crossing flooded roads and never drive around barricades.
Emergency officials suggest clearing storm drains, preparing emergency kits, and reviewing flood insurance coverage in advance of the storm system. Additional watches or warnings may follow as the situation evolves.
