CASS COUNTY, Ind. – An unusually dry air mass and gusty winds are combining to create elevated fire danger across north-central Indiana this afternoon. Temperatures climbing into the upper 50s and lower 60s are mixing with humidity levels near 20%, creating an environment where fires can start and spread quickly.
According to the Cass County Emergency Management Agency, south winds of 10 to 15 mph are expected, with occasional gusts up to 20 mph. The agency urges residents to avoid outdoor burning, use caution with machinery, and delay any activities that could spark flames. Even small embers from grills or yard debris can ignite dry grass and leaves under these conditions.
Officials say today’s fire danger will remain high until winds ease and humidity recovers by evening. Residents are encouraged to monitor local alerts for updates and avoid burning until conditions improve.
