South Bend, Ind. – Scattered thunderstorms are expected to move across northern Indiana on Wednesday, bringing a low but notable risk of damaging wind gusts and hail between 1 p.m. and 10 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, a marginal risk for severe storms will affect areas from Gary to Fort Wayne, including South Bend, La Porte, and Warsaw. While widespread severe weather is not anticipated, isolated cells could produce wind gusts up to 30 mph and quarter-sized hail. The storms are expected to develop slowly from the west after daybreak, then intensify into the afternoon and evening hours.
Lakeside communities like Michigan City and Benton Harbor may stay cooler, with highs only in the upper 60s to low 70s due to lake breezes. Inland, temperatures could reach the mid-80s. Winds will shift from the southwest to northwest during the day, increasing the chance of localized gust damage, particularly near open farmland and roadways like US-31 and I-69.
Residents are advised to secure outdoor items, charge devices, and monitor local alerts. Storms will be slow-moving, increasing the risk of brief heavy downpours and minor urban flooding.
Warnings remain possible through Wednesday night as more updates are expected by morning.
