Indianapolis, Indiana – Residents across much of Indiana could see severe thunderstorms develop within hours Sunday evening as a powerful storm system moves into the Ohio Valley, bringing the risk of damaging winds and isolated tornadoes through the overnight hours.

According to the National Weather Service and NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center, a large portion of Indiana sits under an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) for severe weather Sunday evening into the overnight period. The greatest concern is a fast-moving line of thunderstorms capable of producing widespread damaging winds, though a few tornadoes and pockets of large hail are also possible.

Cities including Indianapolis, Terre Haute, Evansville, Bloomington, and Lafayette sit within the corridor where storms may intensify as they move northeast across the state. The timing window currently favors late Sunday evening into early Monday morning, when storms could organize into a squall line capable of producing powerful wind gusts.

Transportation officials warn drivers along major corridors including Interstate 65, Interstate 70, and Interstate 69 to monitor conditions closely, especially overnight when visibility and warning response times can be reduced. Strong winds could knock down tree limbs, damage power lines, and lead to scattered outages.

Residents are urged to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts overnight, including weather radios and mobile alerts. More watches and warnings are likely to be issued Sunday afternoon as the storm system approaches the region.
