Indianapolis, Indiana – Severe storms are expected to intensify across Central Indiana during the evening commute, with damaging winds and large hail posing immediate risks through late tonight.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, thunderstorms will develop late this afternoon and expand between 6 p.m. and 1 a.m. as they move south across the state. The highest threat zone includes areas along and north of the I-70 corridor, including Indianapolis, Lafayette, Muncie, and Terre Haute.
Wind gusts could exceed 70 mph, and hail may become very large, especially before 10 p.m. A few tornadoes are also possible. Heavy rainfall could lead to minor flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and along roadways near I-70.
Drivers should prepare for sudden downpours and rapidly changing road conditions during peak travel hours. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge devices, and stay alert for warnings throughout the evening.
Storms will gradually weaken overnight as cooler air moves in, with calmer and cooler conditions expected by Friday morning.
