Indianapolis, Ind. – Residents across northern and central Indiana should remain alert overnight as a tornado watch remains in effect until 3 a.m. EDT Friday for 23 counties, including Elkhart, St. Joseph, Tippecanoe, and Grant.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Tornado Watch 257 was issued Thursday evening and covers a broad swath of the state, from La Porte in the northwest to Huntington and Wabash in the northeast, stretching down to Fountain, Vermillion, and Warren counties near the Illinois border.

Communities including Kokomo, Lafayette, Warsaw, and Logansport are all under heightened risk for severe storms capable of producing tornadoes. Residents should prepare for sudden changes in weather and have multiple ways to receive emergency warnings, especially during overnight hours when storms may strike with little warning.

Those in mobile homes or vulnerable structures should identify safer shelter options now. Stay off roads during severe storms, and ensure flashlights, weather radios, and charged devices are ready.

The tornado watch remains active until 3 a.m. Friday, with potential for additional warnings or watches to be issued depending on storm development.
