Indianapolis, Indiana – Damaging winds and large hail could hit Indiana communities Tuesday afternoon and evening as a strong cold front sweeps across the state.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, a slight risk for severe thunderstorms is expected to develop after 3 p.m. Tuesday, mainly across central and southern Indiana. Scattered storms could bring wind gusts over 60 mph and hail up to an inch in diameter. Cities including Indianapolis, Terre Haute, Bloomington, and Columbus are all within the elevated risk area.
Travel disruptions and power outages are possible, especially along major highways like I-70, I-65, and I-74 during the evening commute. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge devices, and have multiple ways to receive emergency alerts. Schools and businesses may also experience temporary disruptions if storms intensify.
This storm system is typical of late-spring cold fronts but could be the strongest in recent weeks. Localized flooding cannot be ruled out, especially where heavier downpours occur.
Severe storm warnings could be issued with little notice. Residents should monitor the latest updates through Tuesday evening, as additional alerts may be necessary.
