Louisville, KY – Heavy rain and early morning thunderstorms are already sweeping across the Louisville metro area and parts of central Kentucky, raising concerns over localized flooding and severe wind gusts.

According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, scattered storms are expected to intensify through late morning, especially across south-central Kentucky. A few storms may produce damaging winds up to 40 mph, torrential rainfall, and even a brief tornado. Rainfall amounts could top three-quarters of an inch in some areas, leading to ponding on roads and minor flooding in low-lying spots.

Showers are likely to persist until late afternoon in Jefferson, Bullitt, Hardin, and surrounding counties. In southern Indiana, including Harrison and Floyd counties, storms are expected to shift northeastward at 30 to 40 mph. Spotter activation may be needed today due to the storm’s strength and rapid development.

Drivers should avoid flood-prone roadways and allow extra travel time during commutes. Those in mobile homes or older structures should stay weather-aware and review tornado safety plans.

Clearer skies are expected by Friday night, with drier, sunny conditions returning Saturday. However, additional thunderstorms could return by early next week.
