Bloomfield, Ind. – Flash flooding has swamped roads and low-lying areas across southern Indiana and eastern Illinois Tuesday evening, prompting emergency alerts and travel disruptions through at least 7:30 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service, up to 3 inches of rain fell rapidly across northern Daviess, Greene, Knox, Martin, and Sullivan counties in Indiana, with another 2 inches possible by nightfall. In Illinois, radar showed similar totals across Richland, Lawrence, and Crawford counties. Flash flooding was reported near Odon, Ind., and multiple creeks have overflowed their banks.

Communities including Bloomfield, Olney, Odon, and Flat Rock are experiencing flooded roadways, particularly near highways, underpasses, and drainage-challenged areas. Residents in towns such as Bicknell, Carlisle, and Elnora are urged to avoid driving through water-covered roads.

“Turn around, don’t drown” remains the key safety message. Officials warn that most flood-related fatalities happen in vehicles. Drivers should detour around flooded routes and monitor updates from INDOT and local emergency management.

Rainfall rates remain high, with localized downpours of 1 inch per hour. More isolated storms may redevelop into the evening before tapering off after sunset.

Flash flood warnings remain in effect until 7:30 p.m. EDT in Indiana and 6:15 p.m. CDT in Illinois. Additional advisories may be issued if storms persist.
