Indianapolis, Ind. – Localized flooding is possible across Central Indiana this evening as a slow-moving storm system dumps up to 4 inches of rain along and south of I-70.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, a Flood Watch is in effect until 10 p.m. EDT Saturday for 22 counties, including Marion, Vigo, Monroe, Bartholomew, and Shelby. The heaviest rainfall is expected through the late afternoon, especially along a boundary zone stalled near the I-70 corridor.
Low-lying areas, poor drainage zones, and urban streets in cities like Indianapolis, Bloomington, and Columbus may see rapid water accumulation. Drivers should avoid flooded roadways, especially underpasses and intersections with poor drainage. Creeks and small streams could rise quickly, prompting localized evacuations or road closures.
Emergency officials urge residents in flood-prone neighborhoods to stay weather-aware and prepare to move to higher ground if water levels rise. Charging phones, securing valuables, and having a go-bag ready are advised in case flash flooding develops quickly.
The rain should taper off by late evening, but additional watches or warnings may be issued if conditions worsen.
