Chicago, IL – A Red Flag Warning is in effect for parts of northwest Indiana until midnight CDT (1 a.m. EDT) due to dangerous fire weather conditions. The National Weather Service in Chicago upgraded the previous Fire Weather Watch to a Red Flag Warning Friday morning.

According to the NWS, the affected counties include Lake, Porter, Newton, Jasper, and Benton. Strong south winds of 20 to 35 mph, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph, combined with relative humidity as low as 30%, are creating conditions favorable for rapid fire spread.

Officials strongly discourage outdoor burning, as any fire that ignites could spread quickly under the current weather conditions. Residents are urged to exercise extreme caution with flammable materials, such as discarded cigarettes and outdoor grilling.

The warning will remain in effect until midnight CDT (1 a.m. EDT) Saturday. The combination of dry air, strong winds, and warm temperatures could lead to extreme fire behavior, making firefighting efforts difficult.

Residents should monitor updates from local emergency officials and the National Weather Service for any changes. Those in the affected areas should secure loose outdoor items and remain vigilant for any signs of fire.
