INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Indiana residents should prepare for significant rainfall this afternoon as heavy showers are forecasted to sweep across the central region, bringing the potential for localized flooding and road delays through Thursday night. Affected areas include cities along and south of Interstate 70, where rain accumulation could reach over an inch.
According to the U.S. National Weather Service in Indianapolis, rainfall will spread northeast from southwestern parts of Indiana, moving through central Indiana by evening. Forecasters anticipate downpours continuing into Thursday morning, with intermittent light rain potentially persisting throughout the day. Areas south of I-70 are expected to experience the heaviest rainfall, with accumulations of up to 1.5 inches by Thursday evening. Locations north of I-70 should see slightly lower totals, around 0.5 to 1 inch.
The storm brings a risk of flooding, especially in low-lying areas and near storm drains clogged by recent leaf fall. Drivers are urged to exercise caution on the roads, particularly during evening rush hours when visibility and road conditions may be challenging. Short periods of intense rainfall could create ponding on highways and residential streets, increasing the likelihood of hydroplaning accidents.
Temperatures will remain cool, ranging from highs around 59 degrees today to the mid-50s on Thursday, with low temperatures dropping into the mid-40s overnight. The five-day forecast shows drier weather returning by Friday, bringing mostly cloudy skies and highs around 57. Saturday should offer a break from the rain, with partly sunny skies and a high near 57, making it a good day for any outdoor weekend plans.
As rain continues, residents should monitor local weather updates and check road conditions before traveling, particularly in areas south of I-70. For real-time updates, follow the National Weather Service Indianapolis office and consult local traffic reports.
