Louisville, KY – A significant winter storm is set to impact Kentucky and Southern Indiana starting early Sunday morning, bringing heavy snow, freezing rain, and hazardous conditions.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the region, effective late Saturday night through Monday afternoon. Snowfall totals of up to 6 inches are possible north of I-64, while ice accumulations could reach 0.75 inches in central Kentucky, creating treacherous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service, freezing rain and sleet will likely begin Sunday afternoon, transitioning into a wintry mix by Sunday evening. Travel could become nearly impossible in some areas, with power outages possible due to ice-laden trees and power lines. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare emergency supplies, including food, water, and backup power sources.
The storm will taper off by Monday afternoon, leaving behind icy roads and continued challenges for commuters. Highs are expected to reach only 30°F on Monday, with overnight lows dropping into the teens. Temperatures will remain cold through the week, with highs in the low 30s Tuesday and Wednesday under partly cloudy skies.
