Bloomington, IL – Cold air funnel clouds may dot skies over Central Illinois and Northern Indiana this afternoon, with the highest chances near I-55 and across northern counties until 8 p.m. Monday. These harmless but striking formations rarely touch the ground and typically appear during early evening hours.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Lincoln, Illinois, and Northern Indiana, atmospheric conditions today favor the formation of cold air funnels—typically seen during late spring when vertically developed clouds form in a cool air mass. A Special Weather Statement remains in effect across Northern Indiana until 8 p.m. EDT. Central Illinois, especially areas east of I-55, may also spot these funnel clouds through sunset.

These narrow funnels can resemble tornadoes but are usually weak, short-lived, and pose little to no threat. They typically form in the absence of thunder and do not warrant tornado warnings unless they touch down, which is rare. Motorists or residents who notice a funnel are encouraged to monitor.

If you see one, officials ask that you share the sighting on social media or report it to the National Weather Service. Skies are expected to stabilize after sunset, reducing the chance for further development tonight.
